Lincolnshire Landlord Sanjeet Dubb Pays Penalty for Wrongful Eviction

A Lincolnshire-based landlord, Sanjeet Dubb, has been imposed a financial penalty exceeding £5,000 for wrongfully compelling his tenant to vacate a flat in Worksop and locking them out of their rental home. By allegedly changing the locks on March 30, Dubb reportedly denied the tenant access to their medication and other personal belongings.

Wrongful Eviction Attempts End with Severe Fine

For attempting to force his tenant out of the flat on March 19 without following legal eviction procedures, the Lincoln landlord, residing in Aspen Park has been fined. Following his actions, the tenant reportedly had to purchase additional clothing and turn to Bassetlaw District Council for shelter.

"It is vital that landlords are aware of their responsibilities and act in accordance with any relevant laws. The council contacted Mr Dubb in an attempt to rectify the issue before it progressed but to no avail. Had Mr Dubb followed the correct process, the tenant would have had much more time to find alternative accommodation and may not have become homeless," said Cllr Jonathan Slater, the cabinet member for housing and estates at Bassetlaw District Council.

Host of Charges Roduced Verdict

Dubb was questioned by the council under caution on April 25 and declared guilty of changing locks without serving a proper notice to his tenant and securing a possession order via the court, as obliged by the Protection from Eviction Act 1977. His insistence on not providing a second set of keys to the tenant, despite requests from both the tenant and the council, escalated the matter.

Details of Fines Imposed

Dubb was found guilty at Mansfield Magistrates' Court on August 31. He has been ordered to pay a £233 penalty, a victim surcharge of £89, £668 as court costs, and a further £4,322 to the council for the temporary lodging provision for the tenant.
