Furniture Shop Owner in Lincolnshire Fined Over Health Risk
Chris Buckley, the proprietor of The Furniture Chest located in Heckington, Lincolnshire, has been met with a fine due to his failure to protect his employees from exposure to wood dust, a hazardous substance. This occurred after inspections on his business premises by The Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
HSE Findings Uncover Serious Health Risks
Following a thorough examination of the store's site by HSE officials on 7th April 2022, a significant accumulation of wood dust was discovered. Furthermore, the local exhaust ventilation systems provided for the safety of the employees had not been sufficiently checked or tested.
Exposure to wood dust, a potentially dangerous substance, can result in serious ailments. This includes sino-nasal cancer, asthma, and other respiratory diseases.
Ignored Precautionary Measures Lead to Legal Actions
The investigations revealed that Buckley had negligently overlooked employee safety by failing to adequately control exposure to wood dust. In addition, he did not ensure the proper examination and testing of the local exhaust ventilation systems.
The authorities' prior visits had resulted in improvement notices related to wood dust control being slapped on the Business owner.
Buckley Pleads Guilty and Confronts Punishment
Chris Buckley has pleaded guilty to breaching Regulations 7(1) and 9(2) of the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002. The courtroom session that took place at Boston Magistrates' Court on October 9, 2023, concluded with Buckley being fined £1,354 and ordered to pay additional costs of £3,578.
"Chris Buckley could have ensured that his local exhaust ventilation systems were thoroughly examined and tested to ensure that they were working to protect the health of employees. A suitable and sufficient cleaning regime could have been implemented to further reduce the build-up of dust. " - HSE inspector Muir Finlay explained.
HSE's Campaign Against Dust Exposure
The HSE is running its campaign, "Dust Kills: Wood Dust," providing free advice on control measures to organisations and workers to prevent exposure to dust. They stress that severe health problems can arise from wood dust, as seen from the incident at The Furniture Chest.
