Poundland Announces Expansion, More Former Wilko Stores Rebrand

Poundland Announces Opening of More Stores Across the UK

Several new Poundland stores will soon be opening in various locations across the country, taking over former shops of the now defunct Wilko stores. The budget chain had previously acquired a number of Wilko stores, following the latter's administration unease.

More than half a hundred ex-Wilko locations have already reopened as Poundland stores while another batch of seven store openings has been disclosed. The surge in store openings aligns with Poundland’s struggle to open 75 stores within a three-month window.

Last weekend, nine new Poundland stores opened for trade across the UK after 10 stores were launched on October 28.

Future Store Openings

In an announcement, Poundland has stated the soon-to-be-relocated branches at Gloucester Southgate and Lancaster Market Gate are slated to open next Saturday, on November 11. Furthermore, a new store at Sunderland Pallion will start its operations on the following Saturday.

The company has confirmed the doors of its four additional former Wilko store holdings to open by December, located in Liverpool, Workington, Falkirk and Cumbernauld.

Poundland’s Store Offerings

The newly minted Poundland stores will host an array of products typically found in the budget chain's current range, including Pepco clothing, numerous grocery items, and a diverse selection of household goods.

Wilko's Demise

After going into administration on August 10, the fate of Wilko's 400 stores and 12,500 workers hung in the balance. The administration led to Poundland owner Pepco and discount retailer B&M purchasing up to 71 and 51 Wilko stores respectively.

Separately, home, leisure and garden retail chain the Range bought the Wilko brand, website and intellectual property for £5m, subsequently announcing its plan to launch five standalone Wilko establishments in Exeter, Plymouth and other locations.
