Threekingham Viking Festival: Relive The Legendary Battle

Threekingham Viking Festival: Relive The Legendary Battle

Viking Battle Commemoration To Light Up Lincolnshire Village

The tranquil rural village of Threekingham, Lincolnshire, is all set to roar back to life this September, with over 300 actors decked out as Vikings to re-enact a ferocious battle that took place in the 9th century. This spectacle forms the centrepiece of the much-celebrated Threekingham Viking Festival, spanning over two fun-packed days.

Festival Time and Entry Details

This historic dramatisation will take place from 10 am to 4 pm on both Saturday and Sunday (September 16 and 17). Generating joy among keen attendees, the event offers free entry and parking, promising an enlightening experience for the entire family.

Immerse Yourself in Viking History

The Aveland History Group, who organised this event, stated, "Attendees will receive a unique opportunity to experience life as it would have been lived by Vikings". Further, the promotional materials for the festival excitedly paint the scene: "Set sail with us for Threekingham, where each day the Vikings' Great Heathen Army will re-enact the 870 AD Battle of Stow at the very site of the original battle".

Educational and Interactive Experience

Beyond the reenactment, attendees will get a chance to discover Viking lifestyles, including clothing and gender roles, through varied educational sessions. Youth-oriented archaeological digs and a well-rounded lecture programme are also on the cards, ensuring an engaging learning experience for all.

A Glimpse into the Past

Supposedly, the village of Threekingham owes its name to the aftermath of this very battle. Legend suggests that following a fight with the Saxons, the Danes buried three of their kings on this site, giving rise to the name - Three-King-Ham. While this is open to historical debate, it certainly adds an air of mystery to the event.

Funding for the Festival

The festival operates thanks to a £6,000 boost from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, which has been allocated by the council.
