The Frequency Festival is due to make a grand return to the city of Lincoln
The historic city of Lincoln will undergo a digital transformation as it plays host to the popular Frequency Festival 2023 from October 26 to 29. This remarkable celebration of digital culture will take over the medieval streets, offering a stunning blend of reality and interactivity for both local and foreign visitors.
Festival Zones
Attendees will have the opportunity to explore several festival zones, each offering a unique thematic experience. The Twilight Zone unfolds after dusk, where giant inflatable monsters, light and sound spectacles, and Aurora Borealis bring a thrilling illumination to Lincoln's attractions — the Lincoln Cathedral's Chapter House being a standout.
Engage with a dynamic world of digital interaction at The Campus Zone on the University of Lincoln’s Brayford Campus. Enjoy exclusive performances, interactive virtual theatre, and a festive Halloween 'Diddy Disco' open to grown-ups!
Experience artificial intelligence, connect deeper with nature, and fly through the skies with a Leonardo da Vinci-inspired virtual flying machine at The Discovery Zone. This encompasses venues along Lincoln’s main streets.
Family-focused activities will be plentiful on October 28, providing a fun and educational experience for both children and adults. Notably, most of these events will be free of charge, although some may require pre-booking due to venue restrictions and high demand.
Artistic Highlights
A range of works from talented artists and exhibitors will mark the festival, with standout creations including 'The Care Takers' by Liminal Creative — a performative sound installation exploring the human brain and memory. Collaboration Skulls and Robots examines co-existence with animals, while Lumo Workshop, Tim Murray-Browne, Maria Mavropoulou, and Studio Go Go present engaging digital displays. Get ready for a breathtaking laser light display from Seb Lee-Delisle with 'Polaris' — early booking advised.
"We are delighted to bring Frequency back to Lincoln for four days," Samantha Lindley, Frequency Festival creative director, said. The festival aims to celebrate digital culture while positively impacting local communities, she added: "Throughout the 12 years of the festival, we’ve consistently seen the positive impact it plays in connecting us with our towns and cities by transforming our day-to-day experiences."
Festival Backing and History
Frequency Festival has been held in Lincoln through collaborations with Threshold Studios, the University of Lincoln, Visit Lincoln, the City of Lincoln Council, and the new Government-backed partnership, Be Lincoln. The festival is also supported by national funder Arts Council England and many local organisations and businesses.
Since its launch in 2011, the festival has hosted over 600 local, national, and international artists and has entertained over 95,000 visitors.
Feedback on the Festival
Charlotte Goy, chief executive at Visit Lincoln, praised the event in her comments: "Frequency brings Lincoln alive in a way that no other event can. For four days in October, the city is bursting with energy from creatives who travel the world to display their work."
