Selfless Lincolnshire Mum Battles Terminal Cancer as Devoted Sons Step Up
Joanne Harrison, 49, a single mother from Bourne, Lincolnshire has been facing the devastation of terminal cancer for the past four years. A formerly trained midwife, Joanne is mother to two boys and has undergone extensive treatment in her battle against stage four metastasised adenocarcinoma cancer, including radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and two brain operations.
Unexpected Suffering and Unwavering Support
Her youngest son, Jakob Lleshi, 17, has fondly referred to his mother as his "number one person". The diagnosis has accelerated the maturity of both brothers, with their knowledge of their mother's illness dating back to when Jakob was just 13.
"Mum's diagnosis was very unexpected and we didn't understand or know anything about it at first. I didn't get told until a couple of months after she was diagnosed," Jakob shared.
Regretful Realisation and Family Unity
The physical implications of Joanne's cancer doubled in severity when her leg broke due to a tumour last summer and never fully healed, leaving her physically disabled. This harsh reality brought the family together and made their plight and her condition more real.
"When my mum broke her leg because of a tumour and it never healed right due to her cancer it became more real for everyone. It changed a lot for me and my brother because we had to look after ourselves more and come together and put our differences aside," Jakob revealed.
Deserved Homage and Heartfelt Fundraiser
Jakob, who studies animal management at college, is now spearheading a GoFundMe to afford his mother the opportunity to have the experiences she wants before passing. The fundraiser has already reached £2,815 as of October 20.
"We have received so much positive support from people who we don't even know that well. There are people my mum knew years ago who have reached out and donated which is nice to see," Jakob expressed, "It's overwhelming and hard to thank everyone. We are all really grateful. We have a few things in mind to do with the money. My mum wants to go to Devon and Edinburgh."
