Overhaul for Spalding's Public Lavatories Begins

Refurbishment Begins for Spalding's Public Washrooms

A set of public lavatories at Sheep Market in Spalding, Lincolnshire are set to receive a significant refurbishment. The overhaul is due to commence in October 2023, with an anticipated reopening in late spring 2024.

What's Included in the Project?

The refurbishment will introduce three new toilet facilities coupled with a baby changing room. The real highlight of these improvements will be the brand-new Changing Places facility, aimed at those unable to utilise standard accessible toilets. This state-of-the-art facility will be equipped with hoists, privacy screens, adult-sized changing benches, peninsula toilets, as well as sufficient space for carers.

Councillor Henry Bingham, who holds the portfolio for assets and strategic planning, remarked, "I am delighted that we can get renovation work in the Sheep Market underway and have them re-opened for the public again soon. I know there has been a strong need and desire to have the toilets back in use, and I thank residents for their patience whilst we made sure we could provide high-quality secure, and accessible facilities for everyone to use."

Phased Approach to the Renovations

The refurbishment is envisaged to take place over three stages. The early phase will involve drainage surveys, electrical work and remodelling of the internal structure to make room for the new amenities. The second phase will cater for the establishment of the Changing Places aspect of the building, funded by a £150,000 grant from the government. The final phase will see the construction of three separate general-use toilets, a baby changing facility with a new toilet, and a toilet for the disabled. Roof replacement, the fitting of new secure doors, re-rendering of the building and remedial works to the surrounding pavement and seating areas will conclude this phase.
