Retford Flood Risk Decreases But Vigilance Still Needed

Flood Warning for River Idle in Retford Downgraded, Residents Advised to Remain Cautious

In the wake of Storm Babet, the Environment Agency has reduced the previously 'severe' flood warning for the River Idle in Retford. While this development is welcoming, residents are still urged to maintain their vigilance, with the warning remaining in effect.

Current River Conditions

River levels in the area are reportedly high but have started to fall, as observed at the Ordsall river gauge. The Environment Agency identifies certain regions namely Retford, Eaton, Gamston, the A638 from Eaton to Ordsall Road, the B6387 Gamston Road in Gamston, Eaton Road in Eaton, and the A631 at Bawtry as potentially at risk.

Incoming Weather Forecasts

The agency anticipates river levels to stay elevated throughout Monday, October 23 and warns of possible further rainfall on Tuesday.

Officer Statements

"It is good news that the Environment Agency has downgraded its severe flood warning. [However,] I would urge communities to remain vigilant and to cooperate with the emergency services as flood warnings remain in place. The people of Retford have shown resilience and true community spirit in their support of each other during very difficult circumstances."

The statement above came from Cllr Neil Clarke, the cabinet member for transport and the environment at Nottinghamshire County Council. Previous 'danger-to-life' warnings led to the evacuation of around 200 local properties, which has left residents feeling 'sad, worried, and frustrated'.

Guidance to Residents

The county council advises residents to be highly vigilant and consult flood alert updates regularly amid the existing circumstances.
