Lincolnshire Illustrator Opens New Shop in Lincoln
In the Cornhill Quarter of Lincoln, a new gift and homeware shop has been opened by Katie Cardew, a Lincolnshire-based illustrator who turned her hobby into a successful business. The shop is located at 43 Sincil Street, forming part of the recently renovated premises within the quarter.
The 'Katie Cardew' shop houses a range of unique designs, from alluring exotic blooms to endearing countryside animals. The product selection includes mugs, tote bags, luxury tableware sets, and fine art prints.
From Hobbyist to Business Owner
33-year-old Katie Cardew, a Rutland resident, is the creative mind behind the business that already has two shops based in Stamford and Bourne. Katie always had a passion for drawing, pursued a different career path in London after studying English in university, but continued to illustrate as a pastime.
"The team have been working really hard over the last month to get the shop kitted out. We are really happy with it. We saw that Freckleface had opened on Sincil Street and we thought we would have a look at this empty unit and it's gone from there," said Katie.
Distinct Factor
The Katie Cardew shop is not just an ordinary gift shop. They offer products designed and illustrated by Katie herself, adding a personal and unique touch to every item.
"It's such a nice area and really smart, it's lovely and we were really impressed with it. We are quite unique in that we aren't just a gift shop, every product has been illustrated by myself. People can see the work in progress and how we design the products. We are really accessible for anyone who wants to pop in and get a little gift, some for under £10," Katie added.
From Commissions to Shop Opening
After being paid to illustrate for a magazine, Katie took the bold leap and returned to her parents’ home to start taking commissions and sell products at craft events. The Lincoln shop opened on Friday, November 3, and to mark the inaugural weekend (until November 5), customers were treated with a glass of fizz and free in-store gifts. The shop will be open from 10 am to 5 pm Monday to Saturday, and from 11 am to 4 pm on Sundays.
