Lincoln City FC Mourns Former Manager Colin Murphy

The football world is in mourning following the death of beloved former Lincoln City FC manager, Colin Murphy, as confirmed by the club. The locally revered figure, fondly known as Murph, guided the team through two successful stints and left a lasting legacy.

Murphy’s Contribution to Lincoln City FC

Murphy, who was in his 70s, had one of his most successful periods as manager between 1978 and 1985, and later between 1987 and 1990. The club statement reported that Murphy had 'passed away peacefully this weekend'.

Starting his tenure as manager in 1978, after transitioning from the role of assistant manager at Notts County, Murphy led the team to second place in Division Four in the 1980/81 season. This incredible achievement secured the club's promotion, a feat which Murphy repeated on his return to Lincoln City FC after they were relegated out of the league in 1987. The club's successful resurgence back into the Football League, on Murphy's return, was fittingly named ‘Murphy’s Mission’.

Achievements and Honours

Murphy's tenure with the Imps marked a series of memorable cup outcomes, notably defeating First Division Leicester City in the 1982/83 season and a close two-legged tie with Tottenham Hotspur in 1983/84. Despite a 2-1 victory at Sincil Bank, Lincoln City FC could not progress due to a 3-1 defeat at White Hart Lane, resulting in a 4-3 aggregate for the London side.

In honour of his immense contribution to Lincoln City FC, Croydon-born Murphy was the first to be inducted into the club’s Hall of Fame in December 2018, and in 2021, the players’ lounge was renamed as Murph’s.

Murphy's Legacy and Fan Tributes

Murphy didn't restrict his managerial talents to Lincoln City FC alone. He also had managerial stints with Derby County, Stockport County, Southend United, Shelbourne, Notts County and Cork City, ending his football career at Hull City.

News of Murphy's demise has led to fans on digital platforms pouring out tributes. A user @SLO_LCFC @LCFCSLO said: 'Thanks for the memories Colin, you were and always will be an Imps legend and more importantly a gentleman.' while another fan, Alex Parky @madeofstone71 wrote: 'Our Fergie, our Dalglish. Honoured to be a part of Murphy's mission.' Steve Wilson @SteveWi91220223 added: 'So very sad news. I called him Mr Lincoln such a lovely lovely man Rip and I'm sure he will keep a watch over us.'
