City Council's New Festive Events Met With Mixed Reactions

Lincoln Christmas Market's Cancellation Triggers Disappointment

Despite the City of Lincoln Council's newly announced festive events, locals express dissatisfaction over the discontinuation of the city's traditional Christmas market. The Lincoln Christmas Market, an annual event that spanned over 40 years, was officially cancelled this year, much to the disappointment of regular patrons.

What's New for Lincoln's Christmas?

The city council plans to usher in the holiday season with a schedule of new events. The festivities include an ice sculpture trail across the city, stilt firewalkers in the Bail, and a festive atmosphere in Castle Square as part of the council's attempts to retain the Christmas spirit in Lincoln.

The End of an Era: The Lincoln Christmas Market

The cancellation of the popular four-day market came on the heels of issues related to overcrowding. The decision to not continue the iconic Christmas market, that had been an integral part of the city's Christmas celebrations, was made early in 2023.

"Surely it's not rocket science, just extend the market further into the town over a longer frame time. I feel very sorry for all the small businesses that rely on the revenue that the market creates," stated local resident Pauline Lowe.
"Very sad to see the market go. Was the highlight of the Christmas lead up for me. Lots of happy memories I hope it will be brought back in the future," shared Ellie Nelson.

Lincoln vs York Christmas Market

Jane Shepherdson drew a comparison between the Lincoln Christmas Market and its counterpart in York. She appreciated York's market due to its extended duration and ease of access to the stalls.

"A simple solution, we went last year and booked a hotel for overnight, Lincoln is missing out on a huge loss of income," said Shepherdson.

Positives Amidst the Disappointment

Ashley Velma Vile Hill took a brighter view, commenting on the individual Christmas markets being held across the city as a unifying factor in the community.

"But what I do love, loads of venues doing their own Christmas markets, bringing the community of Lincoln together," stated Hill.

City Council Viewpoint

Naomi Tweddle, Councillor and portfolio holder for Inclusive Economic Growth at City of Lincoln Council, shared the council's vision for the festive season.

"Christmas is a special part of the year for everyone, and Lincoln is the perfect backdrop for celebrations. Having seen the ice sculptures in other cities bring in the crowds, we have teamed this trail with some fantastic, and traditional Christmas entertainment throughout the festive season so there really is something for everyone. We have significantly invested in our Christmas lights this year and alongside the ice trail, mulled wine, carollers, the gallopers and extra festive entertainment, December will definitely be one to remember in Lincoln," said Tweddle.
