1940s Festival Probed for Possible Fraud After Cancellation

Possible Fraud Probe into Cancelled 1940s Festival, Says Police

Lincolnshire Police revealed the potential fraud probe into Woodhall Spa 1940s Festival set to take place in 2024. The event's cancellation, which was announced on November 4, is now under investigation for a 'possible criminal offence', with further details withheld due to ongoing inquiries.

"Our team is currently liaising with Lincolnshire Police after the committee alerted the authorities regarding a possible criminal offence. As this is an ongoing investigation, we can make no further comment at this time."

This statement was released via the festival's official Facebook page. The authorities further commented on the allegations to the BBC.

"Lincolnshire Police is investigating an allegation of fraud. As the inquiry is in its early stages it would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage, and we will keep the public updated as and when we can."

Festival Cancellation Owing to Rising Costs

The event's cancellation was previously attributed to steeply rising operating costs. The Festival announced their regrettable decision online, attributing it to escalated safety, traffic managing, medical cover, and insurance expenses over the years.

"As our free event has grown increasingly popular, the costs of ensuring everyone's safety and enjoyment of a broad range of performances and re-enactments have risen sharply. These costs are not easing, and at the same time our income and reserves have been slowly eroded by external factors. Our team of volunteers has taken a hard look at the viability of the festival, and with heavy hearts we now have no choice but to say goodbye."

Impact on Local Economy

The festival's cancellation reportedly signifies a considerable blow to the local economy. Craig Leyland, the leader of East Lindsey District Council who represents Woodhall Spa, acknowledged the Festival's significant contributions towards the area's economy over the years, describing the investigation as "incredibly sad news".

"People have invested much effort in this event, including the organisers, participating businesses, and visitors who come to enjoy what we have to offer in Woodhall Spa."
