Tragic Fall Prompts Call for Housing Standards Review

Tragic Incident Prompts Review of Housing Standards

A Lincolnshire Coroner has requested a review of housing properties following a fatal incident where an elderly man fell through a glass door. The victim, 93-year-old Frederick Powell, failed to recover from his critical injuries after the incident at his home in St Martins Close, Blyton, Gainsborough.

Inquest finds no Breach of Regulations

The Coroner's inquest established that no existing building regulations were violated. However, Coroner Paul Cooper has called for a review of the use of internal glass doors by housing provider, Acis Group.

"In my opinion action should be taken to prevent future deaths and I believe [Acis Group] have the power to take such action,"
Cooper stated in a prevention of future deaths report.

Acis Group Responds

The housing group assures they strive to maintain their properties to a good standard. They've been given until December 19 to respond fully to the coroner's report. A spokesperson for the group shared their sympathy with Mr Powell's loved ones and articulated their commitment to safety standards.

"We firstly want to extend our deepest condolences to Mr Powell's family and friends during these difficult times. We are acutely aware of the tragic circumstances surrounding his passing in September, and our thoughts are with those affected.

Addressing Existing Glazing

The group highlighted that the type of glazing involved in the tragic incident isn't unique to Acis properties, but is found across older properties in the social housing sector and privately owned residences as well. Acis Group has plans in place for removing or encapsulating this type of glazing when properties are vacant and is considering expanding this programme.

If any of our customers have any concerns around the existence or otherwise of this type of glazing in their property then we would ask them to contact us directly so we might discuss options with them."
