Old Lincolnshire Oak Tree Claims Title of UK's 'Perfect Climbing Tree'

An ancient oak tree located in Lincolnshire has earned a unique recognition. 'Mr Silly Arms,' a 150-year-old tree in Owlet Wood, Gainsborough, has received accolades as the ideal climbing tree in the nation from over 10,000 trees evaluated by forestry experts.

Sizing Up the Perfect Tree

The nearly 12-metre tall tree was judged based on a specific set of criteria. These included easily accessible lower branches, sturdy and durable branches, and the absence of any endangered wildlife in the tree's vicinity.

'Mr Silly Arms' is uniquely characterised by an extensive diameter of over eight metres and a conveniently positioned low-level branch that facilitates easy climbing.

Rediscovering Nature

Popular sweet manufacturing company HARIBO and The Woodland Trust jointly embarked on this initiative. The main goal was to help adults rekindle their childhood and rediscover the joy of engaging with nature. Site managers from the charity combed through forests and parks nationwide to find the winning tree.

Reconnecting with Inner Child

Reflecting on the importance of this initiative,

Tree expert Scott Fraser, who collaborated with James Jesson from the Woodland Trust, said: "If you told my 10-year-old self I was going to climb trees for a living, I would have just thought that was amazing. There’s something magical about nature and climbing trees that children innately understand – but as you get older, most people tend to lose that ability."

Fraser emphasised the value in adults reconnecting to their childhood love for nature and apect of tree climbing. He added, "You’re never too old to have fun, especially in nature."

Sharing Fraser's sentiments, James Jesson remarked, "Climbing a tree gives you a different perspective of a woodland – which is a definite advantage. We were really excited to find this tree, it’s got everything. It’s safe and accessible, it’s an oak tree so you’ve got that strength in it."

Fond Memories and Forgotten Passions

The study also revealed interesting facts about adults' perspectives on climbing trees. Many adults reminisced about their fond childhood memories spent high up a tree. As many as 41 per cent claimed to have a favourite climbing tree during their formative years.

While a considerable 57 per cent of adults no longer climb trees, those who do find it a gratifying activity that makes them feel happy, active, and attuned with nature.

For the joy of rediscovering nature through tree climbing, Phil Murphy representing HARIBO enthused, "But grown-ups lose that ability along the way to adulthood, and can be quick to overlook the fun to be had outdoors. We’re excited to be partnering with the Woodland Trust to identify the UK’s best climbing tree, to encourage adults and children alike to rediscover the fun to be had in nature."
