Gainsborough Trinity Reacts to Scunthorpe United's Unilateral Decision to Use Their Ground
In controversial circumstances surrounding the usage of football grounds, a disagreement of substantial significance has emerged between Gainsborough Trinity and Scunthorpe United.
Scunthorpe United's Decision
Scunthorpe United's owner, David Hilton, announced last Thursday that he would be halting his financial backing of the club. In a club statement, he communicated his intention to relinquish control, highlighting his untenable position in the organisation.
Simultaneously, Scunthorpe United revealed a serious issue with their stadium. The club declared its plans to abandon Glanford Park following the match against Brackley Town and to complete the rest of the season's matches on Gainsborough Trinity’s home ground. It has emerged these decisions are fueled by a potential liability that Scunthorpe United faces amounting to hundreds of thousands of pounds in legal and excessive monthly charges, and backdated market rent.
Gainsborough Trinity Response
Gainsborough Trinity responded with a press release expressing their concerns. The Gainsborough Trinity authorities seemed surprised by Scunthorpe United's announcement.
"Gainsborough Trinity FC are aware of a statement issued today by Scunthorpe United. This statement was issued without the knowledge or consent of Gainsborough Trinity. While the club has always accepted requests from Scunthorpe United to host matches at the KAL Group Stadium, any such agreements must follow a due process, involving both clubs and ground owners.",
The statement from Gainsborough Trinity also highlighted the requirement of safety certificates issued by the local SAG (Safety Advisory Group), police and local authority, which are missing at the current stage.
Hilton Investigation
The club also asserted that David Hilton is being investigated by the Football Association for matters brought to the FA's attention by The Athletic. Since Hilton's takeover in January 2021, there have been a series of disputes between him and Scunthorpe United supporters.
