First Seal Pup of the Season Spotted at Donna Nook, Lincolnshire
The start of grey seal pupping season has officially begun in Lincolnshire, following the sighting of the first new-born seal at Donna Nook nature reserve. The freshest addition to the local seal population was confirmed by Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust on Monday, October 30th, where it could be seen - albeit at a distance - from the established viewing area.
Unrivalled Wildlife Experience
Donna Nook, a salt marsh located near North Somercotes, becomes a hub of wildlife activity and visitors each year as the seal pupping season commences. During the peak visiting times, which span from mid-November to early December, the area attracts thousands of visitors eager to partake in this unique wildlife spectacle. From October to December, hundreds of grey seals congregate on the beach to give birth, with their pups remaining within the safe confines of the beach for five to six weeks post-birth.
Donna Nook Warden Comments
"In our first pupdate of the season we can report that there is a pup just visible from the viewing area but it is distant. Please note that, for the safety of your dog and the seals, dogs are not allowed in the viewing area."
The seal population at Donna Nook has historically remained strong, with the final grey seal pup of last season born on Christmas Day, pushing the total 2022 pup count to 2,209.
Guidelines for Previewing Seals
The Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust has put in place guidelines to be followed when visiting Donna Nook, to ensure the safety of both visitors and the seals. Visitors planning to see this incredible sight must:
- Stay within the designated viewing area, behind the fence
- Adhere to all red flag and bombing range warnings
- Refrain from feeding or petting the seals
- Children must be accompanied at all times
- Dogs are strictly prohibited in the seal viewing area
- Avoid flash photography, the seals find it distressing
- Parking should only be done in designated areas
During peak sealing viewing season, if possible, it is recommended to visit during the week to avoid congestion on the narrow lanes, car park and viewing area. Traffic management is put into operation during busy weekends at Donna Nook.
