"Celebrating 101 Years of Kinema in the Woods"

Historic Letter Recalls Birth of Cinema in Woodhall Spa

A charming glimpse into the history of cinema in Lincolnshire has been shared by the team at Woodhall Spa's iconic Kinema in the Woods. The team reprinted a precious letter written by the founding Lady Weigall to celebrate the venue's 101st birthday. The humble letter, penned in September 1922, declared the arrival of a novel entertainment medium in the region.

A Step Back in Time

Lady Weigall and her spouse, Sir Archibald, took over the legendary building in the early 20s. She sent her announcement to the now-obsolete Lincolnshire Standard newspaper. The missive displayed her optimism and aspiration for the establishment.

"I am starting this venture with the idea that it will bring a little pleasure and cheer to those who live in the neighbourhood who have for some time felt the need of this form of recreation”

Original Innovations

The letter detailed plans for a ‘very modern’ screen, which was to be transparent, with lanterns positioned behind it. This innovative method, unique to Kinema, continues to be employed today, distinguishing it as the only operating cinema still using back projection.

“Eventually, it is hoped to be able to erect a very nice building and do everything possible to cater for the comfort of patrons.”

Asking for Civic Support

Towards the end of the letter, Lady Weigall solicited for community support, expressing her belief that the cinema could contribute to the well-being and happiness of the local population.

"This cinema is purely an experiment and I do earnestly ask through your column for support from all sections of the community in this venture, as I am sure if carried on it can only make for the good and happiness of the community."

Continued Evolution

Today, the 'experiment' stands as a testament to its founders, flourishing as an integral part of Lincolnshire's cultural fabric. The Kinema retains its traditional interior, adding three extra screens over the last three decades. 'Kinema Too' debuted in 1994, supplemented by a third in 2019, and another in 2021.
