Historic Broad Street's Building Transformation Plan

Historic Broad Street's Building Transformation Plan

Revitalisation Plan for Historic Broad Street Building

A proposal to refurbish a historic 18th-century Grade II Listed building in Stamford, Lincolnshire, has been put forward. The long-standing building located on Broad Street has been serving as a solicitors' office since 1952 and is currently being eyed as potential additional accommodation for a nearby hotel. The applicant, All Saints Hotels, has expressed a desire to drastically change its usage. It is interested in repairing and restoring it to become nine extra rooms for the Crown Hotel.

Restoration to Honour the Past

As per a design and access statement by Harris McCormack Architects, incorporated in the planning submission, the town house needs some attention as it has been somewhat 'neglected'. The statement reads: "The building already has an identity and forms an essential part of the Conservation Area and street scene in Stamford. Its appearance therefore will remain unaltered."

A Vision True to Identity

According to the architects, care will be given to stay true to the building's exterior facade while undertaking needed repairs and restoration. This includes the building's stonework, windows, and doors. They aim to employ existing materials wherever feasible and replacements as and when necessary. They have stressed the importance of retaining and enhancing the intrinsic charm and character of the building.

"Internally, the existing character and charm of the building will be kept and improved through appropriate restoration, decoration, and furnishing. This former residence will retain the effect of a dwelling for all users, with traditional bedrooms, bathrooms, and period furnishings."

The transformation plan is now awaiting judgement from the South Kesteven District Council's planning committee. This potential scheme could give new life to this historic building whilst retaining its centuries-old charm and unique identity.
