Pleasure Beach Founder and 'Local Legend' Dies at 86
Jimmy Botton Sr, founder of Skegness's Pleasure Beach and known as a 'local legend,' has passed away at the age of 86, according to his family. Botton Sr passed away peacefully in his bed on October 18th.
The Botton family announced his passing on Thursday, October 26th, marking the end of an exceptional legacy left by the well-loved entertainer.
"He was my father - he was a legend. Just a wonderful man," commented his son, also named Jimmy, who now runs the Pleasure Beach.
About Jimmy Botton Sr.
Botton Sr took over the Pleasure Beach in 1965 from Billy Butlin, the founder of Butlin's holiday parks. His son was born in the subsequent year.
Even after retiring more than a decade ago, Botton Sr could be found at the beach 'every day', always ready to lend a hand.
Tributes from the Community
The news of his death elicited an outpouring of tributes, from former employees to local residents and frequent visitors of Pleasure Beach. Over 700 people reacted to the Facebook announcement, and almost 130 heartfelt messages had been left in his honour.
"Pleasure Beach has always been a big part of many Skeg people's lives. It's a big contribution to the town," commented one mourner.
A former contractor added: "I had the pleasure of working for Jimmy numerous times, especially in the late 80s and 90s... He was a real old-school gentleman whose word was his bond."
Responses to Botton Sr's Passing
Mr Botton, 57, was overwhelmed by the response. Old staff members, he said, left messages recounting his father's excellent leadership.
"There were old members of staff leaving messages, saying what a great boss he was... It was an amazing response. Very touching and kind," said Mr Botton.
