Skegness Railway Station Undergoes £3.3 Million Revamp
The refurbishment of Skegness Railway Station has kicked off in an initiative to transform it into the preferred "gateway to the town". The £3.3 million redevelopment began on Monday, November 6, with a key focus on enhancing the station layout and passenger flow.
Funding of the Refurbishment
The government's Town Deal Fund fuels the revamp funding, alongside contributions from Network Rail and East Midlands Railway (EMR). Despite the ongoing renovations, the station will continually function at full capacity.
Revitalising Unused Buildings
The first phase targets bringing back to life a long-abandoned building at the entrance of the station. This structure will transform into new retail units and areas devoted to customers, with consistent upgrades slated for 2024.
"We’re thrilled that the investment at Skegness Railway Station is set to begin. We’re eagerly prepared to work with the Connected Coast Board, East Lindsey District Council and Network Rail to significantly bolster the station's resources for our patrons. This inaugural development phase implements transformations at the station front, resuscitating the red star building after a prolonged period of inactivity, thus redefining Skegness station as the town's gateway, promoting synergy with the neighbouring community and enhancing all station visitors' experience," noted Dave Meredith, EMR's customer services director.
Improving Local Connectivity
Chris Baron, Chair of Connected Coast, accentuated that the renovation's progress at Skegness Railway Station would establish a favourable first impression, in line with the esteemed reputation of Britain's leading seaside resorts.
"The investment and bonds with the bus station will foster improved communication between Skegness and the coastline and elevate the area as a travel destination. The commencement of the phase one works takes us a step nearer to realising our aspirations for the railway station, which will consequently witness an enhanced footfall and usage in the future." Baron commented.
Rob Goulding, station and depot surveyor for Network Rail, voiced his optimism by describing the initiation of works at Skegness station as fantastic, eagerly anticipating the new facilities usage by passengers.
