RAF Scampton's Historic Site Receives Grade II Listed Status

Officers' Mess Building at RAF Scampton awarded Grade II Listed Status

In a recent move by Historic England, RAF Scampton’s ‘Officers’ Mess’ building has been officially assigned Grade II listed building status. West Lindsey District Council (WLDC) had applied for the status in order to protect the former base, as preparations advance to accommodate 2,000 asylum seekers at RAF Scampton.

The significance of the new status

This new acknowledgement sets in stone the building’s significance, emphasising both its architectural and historic importance, and highlighting the links RAF Scampton has with the renowned 617 Squadron. Nevertheless, The Home Office continues to express confidence in their plans to house asylum seekers at the base, despite WLDC’s Stop Notices at the location.

Councillor Trevor Young's point of view

The leader of West Lindsey District Council, Councillor Trevor Young, expressed optimism about the building’s new status.

“This recognition of the high degree of special historical interest, especially the base’s role in some of the most famous actions of World War II, is a really positive result for the site, particularly as there remains an element of uncertainty around its short-term future."

High Court challenge

As of October 31, 2023, WLDC, partnering with Braintree District Council and a Weathersfield resident, intend to contest the Home Office’s decision to accommodate migrants at the base in the High Court.

Councillor Young's message to the Home Office

Speaking directly to the Home Office, Councillor Young said:

"Custodians of listed buildings hold a privileged position, having an important role to play in protecting the nation’s heritage for future generations, and with that privilege comes a great responsibility to not only protect that asset but also ensure it has a sustainable future."

Sally Grindrod-Smith’s take on the news

Director of Planning and Regeneration at WLDC, Sally Grindrod-Smith, highlighted the unique nature of RAF Scampton and the Council’s effort to secure a sustainable use for the site in the last five years.

"The newly listed status of the building will provide an additional safeguard for another important building on the site, for which we are grateful."

Additional protections for the building

The new status of the building will offer a special recognition within the planning system, providing additional restrictions on any works that might alter the interior or exterior of the building. Historic England had noted in their report that the building possesses a high quality of design, excellent proportions, and is constructed with quality materials.

The future for RAF Scampton

The listing was applied for back in March of this year by West Lindsey District Council, and published by Historic England on Wednesday, October 18, 2023.
