West Lindsey District Councillors Call for MP's Resignation

In a continuation of internal political tension, numerous West Lindsey district councillors have publicly appealed to Gainsborough MP Sir Edward Leigh to step down from his role within the Conservative Party. The appeal was voiced through an open letter calling on Sir Edward to ‘resign the whip’ – a parliamentary term for surrendering one's position within the party.

Motivation for Council's Action

The councillors' invitation stems from the government's treatment of the RAF Scampton asylum centre, which, according to them, clearly indicates their constituents aren’t of paramount concern. Councillor Sabastian Hague (Liberal Democrat) made a profound point in the letter, saying that Sir Edward's decision to disassociate from the party would clearly amplify his allegiance to the electorate. Twelve fellow Liberal Democrats and one independent councillor echoed this stance.

A Stern Message to Sir Edward

“We, the undersigned, collectively pen this letter as concerned residents, members and representatives of the West Lindsey District & Gainsborough Constituency... The palpable dismay and unrest stirred by this proposition can’t be understated, and it’s imperative for you, as our representative, to not only register, but actively respond to these concerns... It’s time to bridge the growing divide between your convictions and the direction of the Tory party, ensuring that our voices, concerns and interests aren’t merely acknowledged but finally acted upon.”

The Reaction

In response, Sir Edward Leigh defended his track record, asserting his constant efforts for his constituents' welfare, especially in contesting the plan to house illegal migrants at RAF Scampton.

"No one has worked more tirelessly than I have in order to advance their cause and protest them from this unwise plan to house illegal migrants at RAF Scampton... My record is second to none in representing our constituents and making very clear to ministers and officials the folly of their proposals. Their inboxes are full of correspondence attesting to this and you can almost hear the groans from the front bench when I stand up to speak on this in the House of Commons.”

Councillor Hague was keen to rebut, saying it was "disheartening" to witness Sir Edward "dance around the pressing concerns" discussed earlier.
