Roundabout Expansion in Lincolnshire Expected to Cause Disruptions

The A16/A151 Springfield Roundabout in Spalding, Lincolnshire is set for notable changes which are expected to cause considerable disruption to motorists. Lincolnshire County Council's highways team indicates that work on these improvements will commence on Monday, September 25 and potentially span the course of a whole year.

Work Begins Under 'Levelling Up' Initiative

This extensive roundabout project will be funded by a segment of the 'Levelling Up' funds, equalling £20m, which were allocated to the county council in October 2021. Beginning from Monday, the contracted team will set up the site compound and start carrying out the necessary preparatory work.

Temporary Measures in Place to Manage Traffic

Once groundwork begins, traffic management measures will be rolled out, including temporary traffic signals and lane restrictions. Depending on the project requirements further down the line, there could also be a series of night-time road closures on the A16 and A151 roads.

Councillor Richard Davies, executive member for highways, said: "Not only are our ‘Levelling Up’ works in Boston past their halfway point, but we’re now able to announce that our works to increase capacity on Springfield Roundabout in Spalding will start next month.

Further Roundabout Expansion Details

Upgrades include increasing the roundabout's size and adding extra entry and exit lanes, both on the A16 and A151 roads. This project, just like other 'Levelling Up' projects, is designed to lessen congestion on the A16 and help ensure the roundabout's readiness for additional A16 upgrades later on.

Remaining 'Levelling Up' Funds Deployment

The remaining 'Levelling Up' funds are being put to use in four other projects. These include enhancements to Spalding's A16/B1180 Greencell Roundabout, the A16 Marsh Lane Roundabout, and active travel improvements in both Boston and Spalding.

Councillor Davies added: "As with any major road improvement project, some disruption on local roads is inevitable when work is underway. However, we’ll be doing everything we can to keep people moving and to ensure access to the nearby businesses is maintained."
