A Young Lincolnshire Girl Wins Prestigious Pride of Britain Award
Freya Harris, an eight-year-old girl from Horncastle, Lincolnshire, has been honoured with a Pride of Britain award for her extraordinary courage. Despite battling with cancer, Freya has shown determination in following her dream to compete at the world-renowned dog show, Crufts.
Fighting Cancer with a Companion
Two years ago, Freya was diagnosed with a Wilms' tumour, a rare kidney cancer that affects approximately one in 80 UK children every year. In order to help her recovery process, her parents chose to get a dog for Freya. The Australian Shepherd, Echo, incredibly became a source of comfort and enabled Freya to develop confidence during her fight against cancer.
The Impact of Echo
"She's brought Freya so much confidence. She has really helped the family," said Gemma, Freya's mother. Initially, the idea of getting a dog was to encourage Freya to take walks following hospital treatments. However, the bonding with Echo gave Freya an interest in dog showing, an activity that she has now embraced passionately.
The Crufts Achievement
Earlier this year, Freya did compete in Crufts for the first time, with Echo accompanying her. Impressively, she secured the second position within her category. When asked, the young competitor said: "That’s why I am doing it - to help people fight and make dreams come true."
Enduring Challenges and Celebrating Achievements
Even though Freya faces significant challenges due to her medical condition, her spirit remains undeterred. After departing from the hospital following an early morning treatment session, she was able to qualify for the competition. Alongside other inspirational figures, Freya will be receiving her Pride of Britain ‘Child of Courage’ accolade in a ceremony taking place on October 8.
Attendees at the awards include prominent British figures such as Prince Charles and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. Set to be televised on ITV, the event will recognise the various unsung heroes who work towards making the world a better place.
