Avoiding Spooky Waste: North Kesteven District Council gives Halloween recycling guidance

With Halloween festivities comes additional waste and packaging, often leading to confusion over suitable disposal. North Kesteven District Council has issued advice for residents to help manage the seasonal surge.

What goes in the black bin

Primarily, most of the Halloween-related items should be disposed of in the black bin. This includes decorations such as fake wreaths, plastic pumpkins, and hard plastics including props, costumes, masks, and plastic buckets. "If items have electronics or batteries inside, they should be taken to a household waste recycling centre instead," stated the council.

Repurpose and Donate

Believing that some items may have more potential, the council suggested an alternative to outright disposal. "Could they go on to spook again? Give them to a charity shop now if so." Costumes and hard plastic items in good condition should either be donated or taken to recycling centres.

Special instruction for soft and real plastics

Soft plastics such as sweet and cake bar wrappers shouldn't go in your household recycling. However, these can be put into soft plastic recycling points at shops. If that isn't possible, they are to be put into the black bins to be converted into electricity. Real pumpkins should also be disposed of in the black bin.

Similar Guidance Across Lincolnshire

Councils across Lincolnshire have been advising similar guidelines. This includes South Kesteven District Council, who also specified the need to put plastic packaging in the black bin. City of Lincoln Council reinforced the advice regarding disposal of batteries and electricals, stating they are strictly for black bins only.
