UK Doctor Suspended After Unlawful Earnings from False Sick Pay

Doctor Suspended for Deceitfully Claiming Sick Pay Simultaneously Earning from Hospital Shifts

In a recent case that has rocked the medical industry, a UK doctor was found guilty of dishonestly claiming sick pay, while simultaneously earning from hospital shifts. Dr Tracy Landu-Landu, who was operating in the St Helens and Knowsley Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, managed to amass around £10,000 in pay that was not due to her.

Unearned Sick Pay

Between August and December 2020, Dr Landu-Landu falsely notified officials that she was unable to work due to illness. Her claims led to her being allocated the prerequisite sick pay from the trust.

Concurrently Fulfilling Hospital Responsibilities

Remarkably, during her claimed period of illness, she carried out almost 40 shifts at distant hospitals over 150 miles away, including operations in Boston and Lincoln, thereby earning additional salary.

Suspension by Medical Practitioner Tribunal Service

A Medical Practitioner Tribunal Service (MPTS) hearing has now suspended Dr Landu-Landu from practising medicine for the duration of nine months.

Additional Findings

A post-hearing report highlighted that Dr Landu-Landu had been working as a GP speciality trainee in St Helens and Knowsley, having been enlisted into the UK Medical Register in 2018. Interests were piqued, leading to an investigation by the Trust, which concluded last April.

Acceptance of Misconduct

Dr Landu-Landu finally admitted to the charges of misconduct. During the tribunal, she revealed a dialogue she had with her former partner after commencing the investigations, discussing being fired if it was discovered she was working while claiming sick pay.

"I knew I had acted wrongly but did not think it was correct to say that I did not correct my actions when I was made aware," Dr Landu-Landu stated.

Repayment Difficulties

While Dr Landu-Landu has so far reimbursed nearly £3,000, issues have arisen with regards to the payment of the remaining sum. It's expected that the complete amount will be repaid in a period of 18 months.

Reflections and Consequences

The doctor noted that she has had the opportunity to reflect on her actions, admitting that they were wrong. Despite this, the tribunal report concluded that it had been Dr Landu-Landu's deliberate actions that enabled her dishonesty, and she profited from her deceit over several months.
