Humberside Police Clarifies Neutrality Amid 'Woke' Policing Concerns
Humberside Police officers will no longer sport glitter or face paint at events, says Rachel Cook, the CEO of the Office of the Humberside Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC). This statement comes in response to concerns raised over "woke policing" and follows comments by Home Secretary Suella Braverman criticising "political activism in police".
"I think we’re in a very neutral territory," said Ms Cook.
Evidence of Policing Neutrality
Cook has stated the neutrality of the Humberside Police on the issue. She also noted that the former Chief Constable Lee Freeman had greatly guided the force in understanding the concept of neutrality. At events like pride festivals, Humberside Police officers are expected to wear full uniform unless off duty.
Impartiality Review Pending
A thorough review concerning police impartiality is on the anvil as ordered by the Home Secretary. Once completed, it will help in reassessing their practices.
"At that point, we’ll understand where the line will be drawn," said Ms Cook.
Addressing Data Protection Concerns
Recent major data breaches in other police forces have led to concerns about potential similar incidents at Humberside Police. This concern was raised by Councillor Kevin Shutt from North East Lincolnshire Council. Ms Cook, however, confirmed following assurances had been received indicating no such risks were present.
PCC’s Annual Report Highlights
The Police and Crime Commissioner’s annual report was also part of the discussion. The report detailed recruitment of additional 128 officers in the past year, well above the target. The force also secured an additional £12.9 million for policing in the Humberside region for the upcoming financial year.
Among the report's highlights were security upgrades for 453 homes under the East Marsh Safer Streets 4 project, the formation of the Humber Violence Prevention Partnership, and the development of a seven-day-a-week Vulnerability Hub to deal with all aspects of vulnerability.
